The Eddy Mac was a fine ship, rode her the first time in '69 during first class summer from the Academy. Rode her again for almost two years, as OI Div OFF, after commissioned. Deep water Al was the CO followed by Roger Sinclair. Great ship and great crew. Left the ship in '72 in Naples, over the stern, enroute to Grad School at the Univ of Michigan and then transfered into the Civil Engineer Corps retiring in 1993 after 23 years of Naval service. Many happy memories. If ever in DC area say hi!

One of my favorite memories from the 73-74 Med Cruise was HM1 Luce (Doc) purchasing a case of Coke from the ships store just when we got underway from Newport. Doc took great pains to keep it cold in the fridge in sick bay. You could purchase warm Coke from ships store for 20 cents a can BUT if you went to Doc you could purchase it COLD for 25 cents. Doc being the businessman he was continued to increase his sales and in turn purchased from ships store to replenish his inventory. Thereby ensuring the ships welfare and recreation fund would benefit. As I recall Doc made enough profit to pay for a round trip airline ticket from Rome to the States for Christmas holidays and back to Valencia. Doc Luce was a joy to know and be around, it was never dull and he always had some product for sale that he had purchased from someone who needed cash before payday. Then there was the day Doc and another 1st class got into a 'discussion' on the beach and later that night the other 1st class is knocking on the sick bay door asking Doc to stitch him up and Doc refused since Doc was the reason he needed stitches in the first place. I got discharged and Doc made chief and we never set sail together again.
